EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

After Microsoft's stunning announcement last week that it would cut jobs globally, the Redmond giant now says it will also stall plans to build one of three new data centres stateside.

The new centre was meant to manage Hotmail and other Windows Live services - although online servces revenue was up over last year, it appears the rise was too marginal to justify as much additional capacity.

It's certainly the first case we've seen of a DC build being stalled. It remains to be seen whether it might trigger other 'rethinks' or whether it was just capacity overkill to begin with.
