EDITOR'S NOTE

Good morning,

With CES and Macworld developments dominating news this week, Microsoft has quietly slipped out the beta of its long-awaited R2 of Windows Server 2008.

IT managers that have played around (or more) with Hyper-V will know it's the missing link in Microsoft's server virtualisation story.

The System Center VMM release provided one part of that - manageability - and now R2 for the first time offers a beta of Microsoft's Live Migration technology - something VMware has always been able to tout as a key differentiator between the two systems.

If Microsoft are right, we should see a lot more folks making serious virtualisation plays with Hyper-V. Let us know how you go if you're testing R2!
