EDITOR'S NOTE

Morning everyone,

It seems that as we move towards clean, renewable energy sources globally that technologists are really starting to think about how to capture some of the energy that previously dissipated straight into the atmosphere and reuse it - particularly in IT environments.

In the data centre, free cooling is gathering pace, and some centres such as one in Israel are rumoured to use the heat from the centre to warm a swimming pool, located on the roof.

Intel has been talking up power consumption for a little while now, so this morning's piece on using wireless sensors to scavenge energy from the ambient environment and get more accurate data centre power output readings shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.

It could be five years away yet, but at least we as an industry are starting to think about it.
