EDITOR'S NOTE

Morning everyone!

One thing that always strikes me as odd is that it seems to take a downturn to really get people talking about how to reduce costs.

Gartner today has listed a number of tips, among them don't go for the extended warranty, harvest end-of-life servers for any working parts, and display the colour vs b&w per-page print costs on-screen to users to try and dissuade them from sending cheap b&w jobs to the expensive colour printer.

The whole topic of extended warranties has been the subject of fierce debate in recent years - and opinion divides on whether they provide genuine value or mostly a nice upsell for the vendor (given straight margins on hardware tend to be fairly low).

If Gartner is to be believed, that debate could find itself on temporary hiatus - at least until IT and the business are confident enough to spend again.
