When the Department of Education took the unprecedented step last week of shutting off access to its database of college student loan information, it was an object lesson in the potential problems inherent in al- lowing partners and third parties access to your customer data.

The rapid growth of a popular Web site through acquisition brought many different site systems under HomeAway's control, but only a few matched its target architecture of Java applications running on Linux operating systems.
