This afternoon, parent company EMC will spin out 10 percent of VMware in an initial public offering by early summer. EMC acquired VMware in 2004.

Also making news, in an effort to bolster use of its open source middleware and license-free database software, IBM will provide free sales and marketing support to developers who create products for those offerings.
