Vodafone pauses on porn

Vodafone's plan to launch adult content on 3G phones, which was to use Sun Microsystems' identity management software, has been put on hold.

Vodafone's plan to launch adult content on 3G phones, which was to use Sun Microsystems' identity management software, has been put on hold.

Garry O’Brian, identity management practise manager at Sun Australia and New Zealand, said the telco was reassessing how it takes the service to market.

Sun has offered Identity Management software in Australia for the past 12 months.

"Technology is only one aspect of Vodafone's project. It’s more of an issue of how we can do this [roll it out]."

“Vodafone came to us and wanted to know how to give certain users access to content and restrict others," he said.

Vodafone rolled out restricted adult content services to European countries and has had plans to provide local content services since the Australian Communications Authority set out rules for adult services on mobile phones since July 2005.

A Vodafone spokesperson confirmed the company has suspended its local access project.
