The software enabling free phone and video calls that has become popular with home users is beefing up to take on the small business market, said Skype Asia-Pacific vice president Dan Neary.
The development of the software was geared to the best user experience rather than building it into other eBay properties, he said.
A third of Skype's 405 million registered accounts use the software for business.
"Skype is a helluva standalone business; the positioning for Skype has never been better than in the current economic climate," Neary said.
The 4.0 version includes improved audio, enhanced video and easier installation, he said.
The company is working to integrate features such as screen sharing in its Mac version into its other products.
Features from 4.0 will find their way into Skype's business software, Neary said.
The native Skype iPhone application is also rumoured to be launched at the forthcoming mobile conference in Barcelona.
