Handii settles counterfeit Windows 7 case

Pays Microsoft, offers fully licensed replacement software.

Queensland tablet importer Handii has agreed to pay Microsoft Australia $70,000 in an out-of-court settlement over the sale of devices allegedly running counterfeit Windows 7 software.

Handii also agreed to "assist its customers by getting them genuine copies of Windows 7 Professional at no extra charge", according to a statement issued by Microsoft today.

Affected Handii customers were told to contact the device importer directly.

"Note that this... issue affects only Handii-branded PCs pre-installed with Windows 7 Professional, not those sold installed with Windows 7 Home Premium version," Microsoft stated.

The two firms vacated a planned directions hearing in the Federal Court in Sydney today.

Microsoft identified Handii during a six-month regional operation targeting alleged software piracy.
