Gerhard Eschelbeck, most recently the chief technology officer and vice president of engineering of Qualys, has accepted a similar position at Webroot Software.

Webroot announced Monday that Eschelbeck has been appointed CTO and senior vice president of engineering.

David Moll, Webroot chief executive officer, said Eschelbeck's hire – along with the company's new technology development center in Silicon Valley - sends a positive message to customers.

"The clearest trend we see in spyware is the progressively complex technology that these threats are now employing to attack consumers and enterprises," he said in a statement. "With Gerhard's leadership and our new advanced technology center, we are communicating clearly to our customers and to every spyware developer that we are bringing the best minds and tools to bear on this problem."

Eschelbeck has been a frequent contributor to the SANS top 20 and the author of the "Laws of Vulnerabilities." He has also served as senior vice president of engineering for security products at Network Associates, vice president of antivirus products at McAfee Associates and founder of IDS GmbH, a secure remote control company acquired by McAfee.

"Since the company's inception, Webroot has consistently developed and delivered the most innovative and most powerful anti-spyware technology," said Eschelbeck. "By focusing on research and development, Webroot is widely recognized for setting the technology standard. I am looking forward to expanding that technology leadership and furthering our commitment to customers globally."
