NOD32 can be initiated for server or workstation use, making it very flexible for the SME market. The range of features is also good. Automatic updates are provided, and it also offers updates via CD or floppy disk for non-networked machines. Central configuration can be rolled out to workstations and a silent alert can be achieved for admin use.
Available for a host of operating systems and very scaleable, NOD32 offers the small to medium business model an anti-virus solution that doesn't go overboard with your system resources.
It can scan zipped/compressed files and documents, uses heuristic analysis and can even detect encrypted and password-protected databases and documents that are infected. NOD32 claims to detect and clean, to restore infected documents.
Installation on a workstation is simple enough, as is configuration, but as we've said, server-based installation for the larger SME is also available, with roll out of updates to your NOD32-protected workstations. The GUI is bright and well designed and easy to navigate, with monitoring and alert pop-ups to warn the user of any problems encountered. Designated email addresses can also be notified of problems. The settings can be password protected to ensure that users do not unwittingly compromise your anti-virus protection.
Of course, even the most user-friendly software must have a good performance level, and so onto the results.
ESET's NOD32 had a mixed result with some of the SC anti-virus tests. It found no difficulty with the first test and returned a perfect score, but unfortunately it was not so fortunate in Test 2 where it faltered, returning a score of 96.36 percent.
In the third test against our polymorphic collection it had no difficulties and sailed through with another perfect score. The second division viruses did not present a problem for NOD32, where it returned 100 percent. Again in the macro test it didn't falter either, to present a final score of 100 percent. Speed was also up there with the best, taking just 2 seconds to scan the whole directory.
A very flexible and scaleable solution.
One area requires a little work in the disinfection stakes.
This solution has the makings of a useful anti-virus solution. With a little work on the disinfection rates it should prove a good choice for SME use.
