Lockdown Auditor is a 1U rack-mountable device that connects into a network and scans IP addresses for vulnerabilities. The number of permissible addresses depends on your licensing arrangement, with blocks of 64, 256 or 512 available.

This is a serious product for experienced network administrators and comes with a double-sided sheet as a set-up guide (which is all most people will need). An online manual is accessible through the web-based management console once things are running and it is also available on the website. However, a manual in the box would help determine the best deployment.

Lockdown Auditor allows you to easily set up users and IP addresses, both of which may be grouped by department. This is good for larger organizations where administrators want to concentrate on managing one part of the network.

An administrator can see everything. Vulnerability scans may be scheduled for IP addresses to run at predetermined intervals and for a number of times, for example, "scan xx.xx.xx.xx daily for the next 30 days." "Tickets" are assigned to discovered vulnerabilities to support maintenance. Scheduled scans can be run manually and it is possible to search for a specific vulnerability.

There is also a list of "dangerous tests." These are turned off by default in case they crash certain devices but they may be useful in some circumstances.

Lockdown Auditor syncs with Lockdown Networks' vulnerability database every 12 hours and a variety of logical reports may be run, including an executive summary to provide a quick overview.

This is a serious product to conduct consistent and in-depth vulnerability testing against networks. Users should acquaint themselves with the licensing arrangements but management tools are included to make this straightforward. All in all it is a well-considered solution.

For:

Easy deployment.

Against:

Would be nice to include a proper manual.

Verdict:

A good hardware-based solution.
