Review: DataMotion SecureMail Gateway

The SecureMail Gateway from DataMotion provides the ability to easily integrate full email encryption into an existing enterprise environment.

With this product deployed, administrators can create a strong email encryption policy based on many regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act and PCI. These policies ensure that all email that falls under the policy is securely encrypted before it leaves the enterprise.

We found installation and deployment of this product to be easy and straightforward. Deployment consists of two main components. The first is the local server which is deployed in the organization's environment. The second component is the DataMotion cloud which handles all email sent from the server to be encrypted. To set up the server we simply launched an executable installer which took us through a brief setup wizard. We found this to be easy-to-follow and once completed we had the server up and running with a base configuration. All further management and configuration is done using a management console application on the server, which we found to be easy and intuitive to use and navigate.

The product offers solid policy and automation features for email encryption. Email policy can be configured to encrypt outbound mail based on both custom and regular expressions, as well as many built-in regulatory lexicons. This gateway also scans a wide variety of attachment types for possible sensitive content, such as credit card numbers and personally identifiable information, ensuring that all data is protected and encrypted in transit. As an added benefit, this solution also automatically generates an email that is sent to the sender informing them that their message was encrypted at the gateway. Because this product runs transparently to end-users, this message keeps users informed on the security policy of the organization. Users also can obtain a plug-in for many email clients to encrypt email that does not require encryption based on policy.

Documentation included quick-start, installation and administrator guides. The quick-start and installation material works together to provide an excellent overview of installation and deployment of the server, as well as how to get going with a base configuration. The administrator guide picks up where the previous manuals leave off, providing detailed configuration instructions and information on how to use the features and functions of the product. We found all documentation to be easy to follow and to include many screen shots, step-by-step instructions and configuration examples.

DataMotion offers standard technical support as part of the subscription price. Customers can opt to purchase 24/7 premium support at an additional cost, and also can access a small assistance area on the company website that includes a knowledge base, FAQ section and contact information.

With prices starting at around $10.50 per user per month, this product can become quite pricey for some environments. While the SecureMail Gateway provides some solid email encryption functionality, we find it to be an average value for the money based on its slightly high overall cost.

Somewhat narrow in focus, but it does what it purports to do extremely well, albeit a bit pricey.
