This solution provides remote installation, backup and restore capabilities from a central console. Altiris Client Recovery Solution ensures that users can be back at work swiftly should they experience a system crash or virus damage. It requires 30Mb of hard disk space and a minimum of 150MHz processor power on the client side, with server requirements stretching to 350MHz processor, 100Gb hard disk, 128Mb RAM, Microsoft SQL 7.0 and IE 5.0 all running on Windows 2000 Server.

Altiris Client Recovery Solution ensures that users can be back at work swiftly should they experience a system crash or virus damage. Installation relies on the enterprise running the Altiris eXpress (Notification Server) software. This provides the backbone for the Altiris Client Recovery Solution and provides the central console for administration, agent push-out and that all-important remote backup and recovery. Provided with on-disk documentation, including a 'Getting Started Guide,' the process is simple enough.

Once the server software is in place the console GUI is intuitive and easily navigated, providing a well thought out and easily administrated solution. It shows what jobs are under way and how much space is being utilized on the server, as well as its current status. It is a highly scaleable solution that can manage up to 5,000 computers on one server, but is equally at ease with multiple sites running their servers in a hierarchy.

Once the server software is in place the workstation or laptop can be protected. Each workstation has a snapshot of it taken automatically so that all settings and data can be restored should the user encounter a problem. Even laptop users benefit from this snapshot capture method. Each time they dial out during their busy schedule the software can protect against losses caused by virus damage, system failure or user mishaps. Email and contact information can be restored, along with data files, the operating system and all configuration settings down to network settings drivers. The Altiris Client Recovery Solution actually puts the whole lot back as it was when the snapshot was taken.

The documentation, as we've said, is provided on the installation CD. As you load it a Macromedia presentation lets rip, which may be okay if you like that sort of thing. On the whole the navigation for information and installation is excellent.

For:

Very good support and documentation.

Against:

Not sure if the Macromedia presentation is necessary.

Verdict:

Overall an impressive back-up solution.
