Trend Micro: Microsoft sets June record for patches
Microsoft’s latest set of patches released on 13 June, ties the record for the highest number of patches and a high number of 'criticals', said Trend Micro.

The June release included 12 patches, eight of which were tagged ‘critical’, these numbers rivalled the February 2005 release, which included the same two numbers.

Prior to that, the highest number of patches Trend had seen in one release was seven, and only two of those were deemed critical, said Adam Biviano, premium services manager at Trend Micro A/NZ.

Biviano said less than 24 hours following the release of the June update, exploits for 'Server Message Block Could Allow Elevation of Privilege', were publicly released.

The MS06-030 covers two vulnerabilities, both of which affect SMBs. When successfully exploited, these vulnerabilities allow otherwise non-privileged access in which to execute code at the Kernel-level (the core piece of the operating system, he said.

“In addition to the increase in vulnerabilities, Microsoft is also increasingly the specific target of malware writers”, adds Biviano.

“As a result, even vulnerabilities that have existed for years are now being discovered, because there’s a virtual army of writers out there seeking to discover them.”
