Big enough for six mod PODS.

US data centre outfit Digital Realty Trust has paid $4.1 million for its second Australian data centre facility west of Melbourne’s central business district.

Digital Realty buys $4m Melbourne site

The 30,250 square metre site, located in the Paramount Industrial Park, is about 19 kilometres away from the CBD, according to the company.

The company paid $10.7 million in July for a 3.48 hectare site at the western Sydney suburb, Erksine Park.

"Like Sydney, Melbourne has a limited supply of data centre space available to meet customer demand for highly reliable, flexible and secure facilities," said Michael F. Foust, Digital Realty Trust’s CEO.

Construction of the Melbourne site will occur in two phases which will eventually support six of its modular datacentre units, Turn-Key PODs.

“Consistent with our typical development timeline, we expect a 12 month construction period to complete the first building's shell and core and the first two 1440 kW Turn-Key Datacentre PODs," said Kris Kumar, Digital Realty Trust’s Asia Pacific head.

"At the same time, we have been building out our operating platform in Australia with the addition of several new local team members."

The company had no footprint in the Asia Pacific region until November 2010, according Data Center Knowledge.

In July Adobe Systems leased part of a Digital Realty data centre in Singapore to deliver its software-as-a-service products to the region.
