People Telecom has increased the data quotas on its fixed-line broadband services after negotiating a new deal with Telstra Wholesale.

The business-grade ISP, acquired by M2 Telecommunications last year, also planned to revise data quotas on its mobile plans to cater to increased smartphone use.

Sales and marketing director Steve Wicks told iTnews that the company had surveyed some 500 customers last month to determine what they wanted from the ISP.

The survey saw customers demand faster speeds and higher quotas.

About 95 percent of People's customer base were business users and used broadband as part of a bundle of telecommunications services purchased from People, according to Wicks.

Customers received discounts depending on the amount of telecommunications services they consumed in the bundles.

People Telecom used DSLAM infrastructure from Telstra, Optus and AAPT/Powertel – but the latest plan revisions would particularly benefit customers on Telstra infrastructure.

Under the old ADSL2+ plans, the highest possible quota available was 60 GB. The revised plan saw that increase to 200 GB for $109.95 a month ($10 a month more than the old 60 GB plan, but with a substantially higher quota).

The ISP also added 10 GB a month in quota to its old 40 GB ADSL2+ plan for $20 a month less; cut the 25 GB plan altogether; and raised the base plan from 3 GB to 5 GB for $49.95 a month.

All the plans cost $10 a month less when bundled with other People Telecom services.

ADSL1 plans were also revealed: 2 GB ($39.95), 15 GB ($49.95) and 50 GB ($59.95 a month).

Wicks told iTnews that People Telecom was "rejigging" all its data plans – fixed and mobile – "to allow more data use".

"The amounts aren't finalised yet but there's going to be a lot more data allowance for customers going forward," he said.
