Former director of information systems at Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems (BSAS), 51-year-old Walter Powell, last week turned himself in to authorities over a 2009 hacking incident he was accused of orchestrating.

Powell allegedly hacked the computer of his former boss, BSAS chief executive Greg Warren.

While Warren was delivering a presentation to the board of directors his computer allegedly shut down, restarted and then displayed a pornographic image.

Prosecutors alleged that Powell rigged the computer to do this.

Powell was also accused of installing keylogging software on several company desktops, which he reportedly used to gain unauthorised access 100 times over a month period,

The IT director was indicted last week after a nine month investigation was conducted by Baltimore City Police Department's Cyber and Electronic Crimes Unit and the State Attorney's Forensic Investigations Unit (FIU).

It was the first "cybercrime" indictment filed by the FIU, according to a statement by Maryland's state attorney's office for Baltimore City.
