Finisar Australia wins Huawei extension

Finisar will ramp up production of an optical processing module made in Australia for Chinese networking-equipment maker Huawei.

Huawei said it would increase production of the dynamic wavelength processor by 40 percent, creating about 20 new jobs at its plant in Sydney.

The processor is hand-made and takes "up to nine days" to assemble.

"[It] can switch optical channels arbitrarily between up to 10 optical fibre ports in transmission systems," the company said in a statement.

The units are "wholly Australian designed and developed", it said.

Last week, Huawei said it would train 1000 students over five years in next-generation networking technologies, half of them at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Huawei will contribute equipment and staff to train students in long-term evolution, gigabit passive optical network and next-generation broadband applications, it said.
