Fast connection hits Micron21 speedtest mirror.

ISPs Internode and iPrimus have connected their first customers to the National Broadband Network in Tasmania overnight.

Midway Point resident Robert Pettman, an IT customer support officer, had his Internode service connected at 5pm yesterday.

"It's a major speed increase on what I had before, which was a 1.5 megabit per second ADSL service," he said.

"I've done speed tests and have seen a few peaks of 80 megabits per second, although it mostly hovers around 50Mbps, which is what I ordered."

iPrimus said its first NBN customer, identified only as ‘Mark', had an Extreme 100 Mbps service installed about the same time.

The ISP said that the initial response to its Fibre to the Home offerings in Midway Point, Scottsdale and Smithton had "exceeded expectations".

In other NBN ‘firsts', data centre operator Micron21 claimed to have one of the first websites visited by an NBN connection.

"I can confirm that, there most certainly is a very fast, very low latency connection in Tasmania which accessed our Speedtest mirror," the company's infrastructure manager James Braunegg said.

"This makes the Micron21 Datacentre Speed-test one of the first websites accessed on the NBN."
