Financial services organisation Citibank has said it is working with authorities to investigate fraudulent emails, after being the target of a phishing scam email that tried to get recipients to reveal personal information.

Financial services organisation Citibank has said it is working with authorities to investigate fraudulent emails, after being the target of a phishing scam email that tried to get recipients to reveal personal information.

Paul Newham, director of operations at Citibank, said in an email to iTnews that it was working with authorities to "aggressively investigate" fraudulent emails that were being received both by customers and non-customers.

"These emails appear to come from Citibank, but do not," Newham said. "Citibank is in no way involved in the distribution of these emails which direct recipients to a Citibank look-alike website and request individuals to provide personal and account information."

He said that Citibank's systems hadn't been compromised in any way, and that it would never send emails to customers requesting confidential, personal or account information. "We advise everyone to delete all emails received of this nature, even if the email appears to have come from Citibank," Newham said.
