First services by the end of the year.

Neighbourhood Cable will upgrade its hybrid fibre and coaxial (HFC) network in regional Victoria to the DOCSIS 3.0 standard, pushing speeds up to 100 Mbps.

The upgrade announcement followed the completion of a trial in June last year.

The network spanned Ballarat, Geelong and Mildura. Upgrading it was expected to take nine months.

The first services would be available "towards the end of the year", the company's chief Ivan Slavich said.

“As part of our continuing commitment to regional Victoria and belief in high-speed broadband networks, this upgrade enables us to improve broadband speeds to our existing customers, and also offer new ultra-fast broadband plans equivalent to the Federal Government’s NBN," Slavich said.

Current speeds on the network were around 30 Mbps, he said.

Telstra and Optus have previously announced upgrades to their respective HFC networks on the east coast.
