SGI rolls out 3500 series storage servers

SGI has released a new line of storage systems designed for high-performance applications.

The company said that the new InfiniteStorage Server 3500 line will offer up to 72TB of storage for tasks that require high-speed access to storage.

The 4U appliance will have space for up to 36 3.5in drives, and support for SATA and solid state drives. The system will also sport dual-socket Intel processors and support for iSCSI, NFS, iSER and CIF connections.

SGI hopes that the cost and performance benefits will help sell the devices to enterprises. The company estimates that the maximum configurations clock in with a cost of some 90c (59p) per gigabyte.

"With organisations looking for a fully-integrated storage server solution, SGI InfiniteStorage Server 3500 offers a very flexible yet powerful platform," said Bill Mannel, SGI product marketing vice president.

"This is a system that addresses high performance requirements, but at an aggressive price point."

Among the targeted markets for the system will be high-performance computing clusters. Other markets could include video surveillance storage and data warehousing.
