Perth ISP iiNet has renewed its international IP connectivity contract with network provider Asia Netcom.

Perth ISP iiNet has renewed its international IP connectivity contract with network provider Asia Netcom.

The deal renews existing dual-supplier services arrangements, following a new tender process.

Greg Bader, chief technology officer at iiNet, said the ISP had been impressed by Asia Netcom's performance as an incumbent supplier.

"We know how the company operates," Bader said.

A statement released by Asia Netcom said iiNet's customers would get "one-hop" access to major internet peering points in the deal.

"Because the traffic is delivered over Asia Netcom's dedicated internet backbone, it is insulated against traffic congestion and bottlenecks on the public internet infrastructure," the company said.

Deborah Homewood, country manager for Asia Netcom in Australia, pointed out that the internet was not just about surfing the World Wide Web or email, but about powering applications such as video and voice.

"At Asia Netcom, we have been building a world-class IP infrastructure for the past three years," Homewood said.

Asia Netcom, owned by a China Netcom-led Hong Kong-based consortium, claims to have about nine Gb/s of capacity via EAC's submarine fibre optic network.

iiNet claims to have 130,000 customers across Australia.
