Best known for leading the IT Transformation program at Telstra, McInerney was described as “immensely capable” by CEO Sol Trujillo this morning.

John McInerney promoted to Telstra CIO
The Transformation is a business program that aims to overhaul Telstra’s business, network and technology systems. As the executive director, Information Technology, McInerney was tasked with the delivery of the Transformation’s IT program: delivering common business processes, capabilities and training, across Customer Care and Billing, and Operating Support Systems.

He began his career with five years at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, then joined Australian IT consultancy and systems integrator Datum Group to head up their business intelligence practice. During his nine year stint he spent two years as chief executive officer.

McInerney’s appointment frees up the current CIO and SVP, Tom Lamming, to focus on the IT Transformation program.

“For a long time, Tom Lamming has been doing double duty at Telstra as the key figure in our dramatic IT transformation while also acting as CIO,” Trujillo said.

McInerney will continue to report to Lamming, while Lamming will still report to Greg Winn, Telstra’s chief operations officer.

“John McInerney is an immensely capable executive who has been integrally involved throughout Telstra’s Transformation program,” said Trujillo.

“He has led many of the world-leading IT changes we have made at Telstra.”

Mr McInerney said delivering a simplified IT environment at Telstra was a unique opportunity to help create a world-class, performance-oriented organisation as part of solutions delivery.

“I’m proud to be part of this team and very pleased to now lead the implementation of many of the IT solutions we have worked so hard to put in place.”
