Police uncover suspected false ID ring

Superintendent Bob Inkster, commander of the robbery and serious crime squad, said that equipment allegedly used to manufacture the false documents was seized when the police executed a search warrant at the man's home address and a flat in Lurnea.

The Computer Crime Team is carrying out forensic analysis of computer equipment that was seized in the raid.

“They will be searching through the computers to identify the people who have obtained false documents,” Inkster said.

As part of the investigation a 34-year-old Punchbowl man was arrested last Friday, according to a statement issued by the Police. The man was refused bail and is due to appear in the Central Local Court on 29 July.

Inkster said that it believed that the arrest smashed a counterfeiting ring Police thought had produced hundreds of imitation drivers licences, tax returns, birth certificates and group certificates.
