The Department of Defence has awarded a three-year multi million contract for an enterprisewide e-learning system to a consortium led by Deloitte Consulting.

The system, to be rolled out over four years, is perhaps one of Australia's largest e-learning projects and will service over 91,000 members of the Defence Department.

Users will include members of the navy, army and air force, as well as the 11 Defence Department civilian groups, and includes a knowledge management component

Deloitte Consulting will be the prime integrator of a consortium constituting THINQ Learning Solutions, OutStart and NETg. The package will integrate learning management system THINQ TrainingServer, content-centric learning platform OutStart Evolution and NETg's library of 20 online training courses ranging from MS Office to business and professional development.

The Defence Department's expects to consolidate its education by integrating the Defence Learning Management and Learning Content Management systems, and merging them with ADO's personnel management information systems as well as its knowledge management and job performance support systems.

Implementation commenced in May, with a Phase 1 roll-out scheduled to be completed towards the end of 2003.

Director of flexible learning solutions at the Australian Defence Organisation, Brett MacDonald, said, “Quite a few areas within Defence have developed and delivered quality e-Learning for several years. However, the provision of a cohesive and comprehensive approach to the management of learning within the ADO and the increased potential for e‑Learning as a learning solution were the driving force behind our decision to implement a Defence wide Learning Management System. Deloitte Consulting and its consortium met all our requirements.”
