ANZ bank's customers are being targeted in a new hoax email campaign that attempts to steal online banking login information, the bank has warned.

The phishing email, which is addressed to ANZ customers, attempts to frighten account holders into thinking their accounts have been tampered with.

“We have noticed some unusual activity related to your service that indicates that other parties may have access and or control of your information in your service,” reads the email.

“We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your ANZ Account, service from a foreign IP address."

It asks recipients to restore and confirm their account details by clicking on a provided link. If customers click on the link they are redirected to a fake ANZ Internet Banking logon page.

Account information may be captured if users enter their details, according to ANZ’s warning.

“Under no circumstances should you click on the link, reply to the email or provide any of the requested details," the bank said in a warning on its website.

“Always ensure that you only log on to ANZ Internet Banking by typing www.anz.com into the address bar, rather than following links to the ANZ website. Disregard any emails that advise otherwise.”

Customers who have received the email and are concerned should contact ANZ's Internet Banking Help Desk on 13 33 50.
