EDITOR'S NOTE

Greetings,

The Australian Government has backed a United Nations project to use data mined from social networks, search queries, blogs and SMS messages to support policy making.

Meanwhile, the Attorney-General's department is considering whether to expand Australia's telecommunications interception regime to require cloud providers and social networks to capture and store customer information for the intelligence community.
