Telstra slams Optus for cancelling Fusion wireless broadband

Telstra slammed Optus as 'a disaster' after Australia’s number two carrier cancelled its popular Fusion wireless broadband service.

An Optus representative told iTnews, “Optus has made the decision to suspend sales of Optus Wireless Fusion to ensure we deliver an optimum experience to our customers using the product.

“Existing Optus Wireless Fusion customers will continue to be supported by Optus and experience no disruption to their service.”

The Fusion service, part of Optus's 3G wireless network, was reportedly clogged by new iPhone users, causing slow traffic and long queues for customer service.

Telstra slammed its rival for cancelling the service, saying that Optus was unable to deliver what it promised customers.

“SingTel Optus might pretend the fault lay in the popularity of its offerings but in reality, this points to an under-engineered and/or an under-invested network that apparently cannot cope with demand or deliver to customers what was promised,” said David Quilty, Telstra’s Group Managing Director, Public Policy and Communications.

Quilty said that the cancellation was 'further evidence that Optus is not up to delivering the National Broadband Network'.

“This disaster really begs the question how anyone could risk something as important as Australia’s broadband future to an operation that cannot get its basic wireless network to work effectively,” said Qulity.

“Imagine entrusting the National Broadband Network to Optus and its monopolist Terria outfit, only to have the admission a few weeks later that it was barely capable of dial-up speeds as was reportedly the case with Fusion.”

Answer our poll: Who do you think is mostly likely to supply national broadband?

At least Optus had the guts to try to offer something competitive...What has Telstra offered lately??? $250/GB excess charges is Telstra's latest consumer offering..

Telstra offer a network that works. and the cost difference between Telstra and Optus is the cost difference that the carrier has to pay in providing a network that works all the time, and one that works some of the time.

"Optus and its monopolist Terria outfit".

Now that is a case of the Pot (Telstra) calling the Kettle black. Hypocrasy for the win.

This Quilty guy looks to be a bigger motor-mouth than the erstwhile Phil Burgess. So the choice for NBN customers are either give it to Telstra and be gouged and ripped off without relief for the next 30 years, or give it to Terria and have it fall-down and go boom on frequent occasions. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.

@Dave
Their massive multi-billion dollar profits beg to differ. Telstra is one of the most profitable telecommunications companies in the world. And for a country with the size and population of Australia, it only shows just how much Telstra is price gouging.

"Optus and its monopolist Terria outfit" This coming from the company planning to cut 800 Jobs?

Not really making sense to me.

This is funny coming from Telstra, because Next G (in urban areas) is *far* from uncongested.

You would have to be jocking.
I use three mobile on my phone and three mobile at home and I pay a tiny pittance compared to what telstra charges my friends who have less download capabilities then I do. Telstras who live in glass houses should not through stones. By the way, Three's customer service operators are the best in the world. Try them, they will pull out all stops any time of the day any day of the week until your problem has been solved. My son uses telstra and recently waited 45 mins for an operator to answer his call and then gave up. Put that in your NBN and smoke it.

Australia's net altogether is horrible mainly because of Telstra controlling the backbone of everything, they can't talk at all...

Optus suffers from a lack of planning and stress testing on it's resources. Telstra is more stable and expensive. Agreed. But memo to all -Three's customer service is outsourced and very average. Make your choice!

Optus offered a competitive product? No good being competitive on price if the network cant handle the traffic.

I remember not that long ago that Optus had a major network failure. The reason, Optus used their redundant link to take normal traffic because their main link did not have surplus bandwidth. The network failed when the main link was cut & the traffic was switched to the backup that was already saturated.

And people want these geniuses to build & control the proposed FTTN.

I am no Telstra fanboy, infact I don't have a single service with them, but you cannot argue that Telstra's wireless network performs better than Three, Voda, Optus, over 570 tests recently proved Optus to have the slowest 3G network out of all of them.
As for the earlier comments regarding Three, that's who my mobile carrier is, not sure why you feel their customer service is so good, everytime I have had to call them they were clueless!

Telstra's network does not work all the time either! I have a 3G wireless broadband with a PROMISED 512kbps connection and the most i seem to get is 8kbs download and i live less than 10 kilometers from the damn tower! So i think BOTH companies need to pull their heads outta their arses and make something that BLOODY WORKS! I pay 119 a month for something that downloads at the same speed as dial-up! AND I ONLY GET 6 GIG! Telstra is a load of crap and anyone who trusts them with the nation broadband scheme is a total idiot. Instead of just using who's there, why doesn't somebody do something about the ones we have that are not doing their job!

I think that it is a good thing that optus pull a product that is not going to work. Telstra is the king of instabillity, i am on an ADSL2 plan with telstra that i have to pay $100 a month for plus line rental. i have been with them for 6 months (only because they do not rent space in the local exchange to other providers of ADSL2 so they can have the market in the area) this service has failed on me more times in the past 6 months than i have had in the entire 8 years i have been with optus. also if a service is not going to work in your area optus will tell you where is telstra will sign you up to the service even though they know you are too far away from the exchange. optus have much better customer service than telstra, telstra are more like the spoiled little brat that crys to the public bad mouthing optus when something does not go there way. also if they have this wonderfull technology why is it that with telstra you have to pay line rental and internet costs when a smaller company (IINET) have an naked dsl2+ service that does not require a phone service. when i asked telstra they said "this is not possable on our network" i think it is because that does not benifet them financially at all. i think optus should get the NBN
