Firefox faster with TraceMonkey

Firefox will run Web-based applications such as Gmail faster now that it has incorporated a feature called Trace Monkey, a source at Mozilla claims.

While JavaScript has been used to provide rich Internet applications, it has been tiggered by dodge performance. As a result many developers have been moving to Adobe's Flash.

Mozilla hopes that TraceMonkey will shift everything back as it brings native code speed to Javascript.

Mike Shaver, Mozilla's interim vice president of engineering, said that Javascript performance nearly doubles compared to Firefox 3.0, based on the Sun Spider test of Javascript performance.

This speed brings image editing and 3D graphics into Javascript's abilities, he claimed.

You can play with it on the latest developer version of the open-source Web browser, and it will appear in the next released test version, which likely will be the first beta of Firefox 3.1 which will be out at the end of the year.

Brilliant - I've built a number of different apps in JavaScript for different devices because where it can do the job, it's just so compatible and (generally) very secure for the user; not to mention the numerous free editing tools. Performance is the biggest disadvantage (along with the "view source" problem if you don't want people to see your code - but I'm one of those commie, open-sourcers... ;), and now they've addressed it. Nice work Mozilla! I hope TraceMonkey delivers what it says it will.
