Apple twice the price of PCs

Research by analyst house NPD has shown that on average Apple users pay twice as much in the shops as PC users..

Retail data showed that in June the average cost for a Windows laptop was US$700, compared to US$1,515 for an Apple machine.

The difference was even more stark with desktop models, with the average Windows machine going for US$550, compared to US$1,543.

“There are plenty of Windows PCs you can buy at high prices,” Stephen Baker, NPD’s vice president of industry analysis told vnunet.com.

“But if you want to buy an Apple you don’t have any choice, you’ll have to pay more.”

He continued that in his opinion it was just a choice Apple had made, and the company could argue that the value of the software and brand made up for the price differential.

The situation was comparable with the car market he explained. BMW and Chevy make basically the same product, a car, but the difference in branding, how customers were treated and perceived value lets BMW charge more.

This is not to say Apple don’t make low cost products. He praised the company for its skilful roll out of a range of iPod media players to suit all markets without lowering brand value.

But he warned it was unlikely in his opinion that Apple would be bringing out a low cost computer line any time soon.

“I’ve wrestled with that one, but I don’t see today what the driver is to make them want to do that.”

“Sales still growing stronger than anyone else’s in the market so there’s little incentive. That’s the kind of strategy you adopt when you realise growth is slowing.”

First hardware costs comparisons of product lines using "average cost" as a basis is very uninformed. Cheap hardware is sold to corporations which Apple doesn't make as you said. This distorts the sample numbers. Apple also supplies more software in the initial purchase. What it comes down to is value not price. Those shopping price are not getting value.

This article is total BS. There is no way that a PC laptop for $700 can come close to a Mac for $1100. Same processor? Doubt it. Same Hard Drive? Doubt it. RAM? Camera? Plus comparing Chevy to BMW? Come on... there's a thing called QUALITY! But even still... let's starting adding to a PC what the Macs have with iLife. It would easily surpass $1100 with comparable software. Now... we haven't even factored in security/virus software which Macs DO NOT NEED! Plus when that Windows piece of crap DOES go down and it will, what's your bill per hour? $90? Plus your own loss in time and real potential loss of valuable files. OS X on Mac is very very strong and just getting better. Vista made a brutal attempt at copying it. Mac users also have proven to be more productive which means income. Sorry... this article is just BS and more journalism fodder by a guy who did not research things at all!!

A = A = A = A = A

Hey, for the same money some people spend on a posh nine course meal with champagne, pate de fois gras, lobsters and all, you can get a couple hundred filth burgers - full of trans fats - and gallons of malt liquor - a real gut buster!

It's all the same!
