Telstra is taking aim at cash-strapped small business owners with the launch of $0 upfront laptop packages that come bundled with the telco’s Next G broadband service.

The launch comes as a response to Australia's growing mobile workforce, which the telco estimates has exceeded more than three million Australian mobile workers.

"Building on the success of the $0 upfront mobile phone offers that really took off in the 90s, we've decided the time is right to extend the same deal to mobile broadband,” said Cathy Aston, executive director of Telstra business.

"Increasingly, mobile broadband-enabled laptops are as essential as mobiles, especially for business people. They're easy to take to many places, you can even go away for a few days, take your laptop and stay connected to the business."

Although the laptops come at no upfront cost, customers will be bound to a 36-month long contract at $99 per month.

The $99 fee covers the cost of the hardware and broadband connection which comes with 1GB data allowance on Telstra’s Next G network. The total cost over the life of the contract comes out at $3564.

The $0 laptop package is available to Telstra Business customers through selected dealers including Harvey Norman, ICT Distribution and Techhead Interactive until June 30.

Interesting... considering 3 Mobile offered 1GB for $15/month, 36 months would come to $540. This included a free device. Aside from the fact that you have to commit to 3 years (as oposed to 3's 2 years), unless Telstra are provide a laptop worth about $3,000, they still need to come to the party.

No cf, The Tesltra laptop is worth all of $700.00. And while I do not like Telstra at all - the difference between Telstra's deal and the 3 deal is the network. For someone like me in a regional centre Telstra offers the ONLY option to get mobile broadband. So as much as we are jealous of you city folk who can get 1GB for $15, $99 is almost platable. But of course there is no digital divide between city and country is there?!!... Yeah, right.

I hear this argument about country folk being disadvantaged again and again, in comparison with their city cousins. But what do they pay for housing? You can bet it's way lower than if they lived in the city. And the reason for the lower housing cost in the bush, is precisely because they have lower access to all sorts of services, including digital. You can't have it both ways, sorry. :-)

Accomodation and food costs is always more or regional areas, Karratha is almost 3 x the price for rentals, if you can get one, and fuel and food in Kalgoorlie is about 20% dearer. Do the maths.
