Electronics giant relies on perpendicular magnetic recording.

Samsung today began shipping what it claims are the first 1.8in hard drives boasting a capacity of 60GB per disk. Just 5mm tall the firm's N-series comes in 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB capacities.

The electronics giant said that, until now, two disks were required to reach a 60GB storage capacity in a 1.8in drives, which increased the height and size of the drive.

Samsung's N-series utilises perpendicular magnetic recording technology to offer 60GB on a single disk.

The drives respond to the increasing demand for added capacity in smaller and smaller PC, mobile and consumer electronics applications.

The range supports PATA(ZIF) as well as the new CE-ATA interface designed for hard drives used in consumer electronics, MP3 players, portable media players, notebook PCs, UMPCs, car navigation systems, GPS and other digital consumer applications.

Samsung's 1.8in N-series hard disk drives are available in internal and external HDD types.
