Fueled by strong demand for high-speed internet access, Telstra BigPond has reported that it has hit the 1,000,000 ADSL subscriber mark.

Fueled by strong demand for high-speed internet access, Telstra BigPond has reported that it has hit the 1,000,000 ADSL subscriber mark.

The news coincides with a doubling in the ISP’s ADSL customer base over the last year.

BigPond Group managing director, Justin Milne, said in an ASX statement that the company’s first 500,000 ADSL customers had taken some six years to acquire, with the remaining 500,000 taking less than a year.

Milne said the launching of several services to complement basic ADSL provision had also helped to fuel demand.

In the last year BigPond had launched a movie download service, BigPond Wireless Broadband, a bloging service and a cable connectivity offering speeds up to 17Mb/s speeds.

ADSL broadband services were currently available to 88 percent of Australians nationally, Telstra said.
