Scribus: Desktop Publishing Software

May 14, 2007

Impressive and free antivirus and antispyware package

Platform: Windows 2000, Windows XP

Type:

Manufacturer: Scribus

Size: 18.4MB

Rating: 4

Verdict: A great antivirus and antispyware program at no cost

System Requirements:
For Windows 2000 Only - The GDI+ library from http://www.microsoft.com. Unfortunately, as Scribus is an open source application under the GNU GPL, we cannot include this file within the installer. Windows XP includes this library already. Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP are supported. Windows 98 and ME have not been tested and are not supported. Any and all bug reports relating to Windows 9X will be closed quickly. 256 Mb or more system memory - the more the better. 512Mb or more is strongly

If professional desktop publishing software is out of reach, Scribus is certainly worth a look. As open source software it can be downloaded and used for no charge.

The weakest point of Scribus compared to more expensive alternatives is that there is only a handful of templates supplied with Scribus. But the editing options are just as powerful as the competition. It can open documents from OpenOffice Draw but not Microsoft Publisher. Finished projects can be printed or saved as PDF files.

Help is provided in the form of online documentation (well above average) and a user wiki.

Scribus is supplied with most Linux distributions but there are downloads for this operating system as well as MacOS X and OS/2 . It is also strongly recommended that Ghostscript is installed before Scribus.
