If professional desktop publishing software is out of reach, Scribus is
certainly worth a look. As open source software it can be downloaded and used
for no charge.
The weakest point of Scribus compared to more expensive alternatives is that
there is only a handful of templates supplied with Scribus. But the editing
options are just as powerful as the competition. It can open documents from
OpenOffice Draw but not Microsoft Publisher. Finished projects can be printed or
saved as PDF files.
Help is provided in the form of online
documentation (well above average) and a
user
wiki.
Scribus is supplied with most Linux distributions but there are downloads for
this operating system as well as
MacOS
X and
OS/2
. It is also strongly recommended that
Ghostscript
is installed before Scribus.
