May 7, 2010

Add a Folders Size column to Explorer

Platform: Windows 2000, Windows XP

Type: freeware

Manufacturer: SouceForge

Size: 223Kb

Rating: 4

Verdict: Does a small task, very well.

Although Windows Explorer is due to receive a makeover in Vista, the current edition hasn’t changed for a while, which is a reason why many people have moved to third-party file managers, such as Directory Opus, which offer additional functionality and flexibility.

However, there are plenty of freeware tools that will enable you to enhance Windows Explorer so you can quickly view left on your hard drive or, like this tool, see the size of the folders on your drive.

Folder Size for Windows adds a new column to the ‘Details’ view in Windows Explorer. This new column shows the size of files, but also the size of folders (or sub-folders). It can keep a track of the folders you view, and scans them in the background so you can see complete size of all files within the folder.

Note that you’ll need to open your Windows Explorer windows with the ‘Details’ view to see your new ‘Folder Size’ column.

Version 2.5 includes some important updates including reducing the amount of memory required by around 20% and a new icon for the Control Panel. Full details can be found on the Changelog.

Please note that Folder Size only works with Windows 2000 and XP and is not compatible with the changes to Explorer in Windows 7 and Vista. This download is the 32-bit version, the 64-bit version can be found on the Folder Size website.
